3. The Lonely And The Dead - A KILLER SINGS THE SONG OF THE DEAD
A man hangs by the neck from a derelict pier on the Clyde, while a haunting melody plays on a loop. Not until the pathologist discovers that the victim was already unconscious before he was hung, do the police realise this wasn’t suicide.
DI Buchan and his team are called. The victim was a composer, who’d been working on the soundtrack of a TV serial killer show. The show, plagued by arguments and in-fighting, is in post-production. An uncomfortable air of angst and anger hangs over it. Wrath has been unleashed.
As the short, claustrophobic days of a cold, bleak January continue, another member of the production team dies, and a real-life serial killer has been let loose…
4. A Long Day's Journey Into Death - A regular day at the Serious Crime Unit quickly spirals out of control, when DI Buchan and his team are asked to investigate the case of a missing film director.
The story of Claire Avercamp has been in the news, but her life has been a tale of a wasted career, failed relationships, drugs, alcohol and bad decisions. She’s been missing for over a week, presumed drunk, comatose or dead, but she’s burned so many bridges, no one seems particularly concerned.
However, Avercamp's father is an old friend of the chief inspector, and brings new information. His daughter had been working on a film about the theft of antique manuscripts. Despite all the evidence to the contrary, he thinks her disappearance is not an act of self-sabotage.
At first reluctant to get involved, Buchan quickly realises this is a high stakes game, and there are more players than anyone realised. Money is at play, lives are on the line, and deadly intrigue lurks around every twist and turn of a day that will stretch deep into the darkness of night…
5. We Were Not Innocent - Set a few months after the terrible events of A LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO DEATH, We Were Not Innocent finds Buchan still haunted by the murder of one of his team, but now excluded from the investigation into the activities of the gang who carried out the crime.
A bleak day in November starts badly, with Buchan called to the scene of a murder. There's a horror movie shooting in a grand old church in the city, and the associate minister has been found dead, killed after the fashion of Yael's murder of Sisera in the Book of Judges.
Once again thrown into the arts world, this time multiplied by religion, Buchan's troubles are exacerbated by being called to face an inquiry into the events of the previous summer. There is someone on the inside of Police Scotland out to get Buchan, and this latest murder case, and the continuing fallout of the previous one, will come crashing together in another shocking conclusion...
6. The Last Great Detective - Unexpectedly called back to duty after two months fruitlessly shadowing Polish crime kingpin Jan Baltazar, DI Buchan has no idea what will be waiting for him. Nevertheless, the small-time gangland murder that is reported on his first morning back reveals there’s trouble in store.
When another officer from the Serious Crime Unit is murdered the following day, Buchan and his team see Baltazar’s dark shadow all over the death. However, everywhere he turns, it seems Baltazar has already been. Everyone he speaks to, Baltazar has already compromised.
But as the fight for control of the city streets comes to a head, Buchan begins to realise that Baltazar is not his only enemy, and that there are older and fouler things than a Polish mobster in the deep places of the town…
