Overview: Michael Kurland grew up in New York City, attended Columbia University, spent four years in the Army, much of it in Europe, and now lives in California with his partner, novelist Linda Robertson, a dog, a cat, and an occasional visiting family of raccoons. He has been a teacher of obscure subjects to disinterested children, the editor of a magazine even more idiosyncratic than himself, a seeker of absent persons, a magical explainer, and guest lecturer at numerous unrelated events. Kurland has written a dozen or so science fiction novels, a brace of mysteries, and several books that fit into that tenuous genre known as “mainstream.” He has been nominated for an Edgar (twice) and for the American Book Award. His books have been translated into eleven other languages.

Where history pivots, time plays tricks. Somewhere out there in the dark, with both moons in hiding, the Saracen Horde was preparing an attack on the Holy Crusade. You could always tell because the Guests were gathering above in their flitterboats. For the men in the field however, it was warfare, honourable and deadly, for there was a Sacred Cause to be won. So believed Corporal Allan, and so he fought until the accident. Then he discovered he’d have to fight his way through a dozen warring before he could claim the truth, and his own sacred cause.

Daniel Godfrey has been sentenced to be transported to a prison planet for a crime he didn’t commit. But something goes wrong with the transmatter device, and Daniel and his companions are thrust onto an alien world whose people are more human than they have any right to be. This is a place where pirate ships fly, giant birds recite poetry and eat people, and the moving city of Beloparsus is slowly and ponderously approaching the sea. And somewhere on the planet, for a reason Daniel cannot guess, someone is trying to kill him…
