Overview: This tale takes place in the suburbs of Newcastle beginning in the 1980s, where we meet three girls who begin their first day at school together in the same time and place. Their lives, however, will be lived and experienced very differently.
There is Lisa, a 'Newcastle Princess' and Queen Bee. And there is Sue Brown, a plain and ordinary suburban girl, whose life initially follows the path set out for her. But, later, she steps off this path and takes a different direction as she begins to discover her real self. We then meet Beatrice, the central protagonist of our story, who finds herself poor, despised and a victim of bullying and injustice. As Beatrice's' story unfolds, we travel along with her and see where life takes her. We, the reader, are also allowed into her internal voyage of the mind, as she struggles to find meaning in her existence, a way to live, and to develop into a complex person in the world.
