Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert
Requirements: .ePUB or .MOBI reader, 10 MB
Overview: Madame Bovary scandalized its readers when it was first published in 1857. And the story itself remains as fresh today as when it was first written, a work that remains unsurpassed in its unveiling of character and society. It tells the tragic story of the romantic but empty-headed Emma Rouault. When Emma marries Charles Bovary, she imagines she will pass into the life of luxury and passion that she reads about in sentimental novels and women's magazines. But Charles is an ordinary country doctor, and provincial life is very different from the romantic excitement for which she yearns. In her quest to realize her dreams she takes a lover, Rodolphe, and begins a devastating spiral into deceit and despair. Flaubert captures every step of this catastrophe with sharp-eyed detail and a wonderfully subtle understanding of human emotions.

Here I've collected the four most recommended modern translations, as well as a bilingual edition using the respectful first translation by Eleanor Marx-Aveling from 1886. The most lauded new translation is by Lydia Davis, published by Penguin in 2010. Also, included are translations by Francis Steegmuller (1959), Geoffrey Wall (1992), and Adam Thorpe (2011.) Each version is separated into unique folders, as the file names are the same -- you may amend them if you decide to keep more than one translation. I have provided notes with links as to the comparative merits of each so you can determine which better suits your preferences.
