Too Late the Hero by Con Sellers
Requirements: .PDF reader, 12.4MB
Overview: The South Pacific, Spring of 1942 and American translator Sam Lawson is sunning himself on the beach, successfully avoiding the war, just about to go home for 30 days vacation, when he is summoned to the Head Office for -you guessed it--one last job. His mission awaits in a Japanese-held island in the Pacific, joining a disheveled British combat unit to detonate a radio transmitter.
Five hundred yards of turkey shoot open land separates them from the enemy so it's a mad dash for the treeline to get things going and they have a plethora of horrors awaiting them: the commander is a trigger-happy loon, the tough Sergeant lies with throat slashed, cigarette still smoldering in his clenched fist, one Brit chops off the fingers of dead Japanese soldiers to get their wedding rings.
The sustained hunting of the men by the vengeful Japanese commander that takes up the final half of the book is especially well done, making you feel the physical ordeal of being pursued through the steaming jungle by an implacable foe. Quite a ripping read.
