Overview: Norman Kingsley Mailer was an American novelist, journalist, essayist, poet, playwright, screenwriter, and film director. He was born in 1923 and published his first book, The Naked and the Dead, in 1948.
Along with Truman Capote, Joan Didion, and Tom Wolfe, Mailer is considered an innovator of creative nonfiction, a genre sometimes called New Journalism, but which covers the essay to the nonfiction novel. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize twice and the National Book Award once. In 1955, Mailer, together with Ed Fancher and Dan Wolf, first published The Village Voice, which began as an arts-and-politics-oriented weekly newspaper initially distributed in Greenwich Village. In 2005, he won the Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters from The National Book Foundation.

The Naked and the Dead (1948): Based on Mailer's own experience of military service in the Philippines during World War Two, The Naked and the Dead is a graphically truthful and shattering portrayal of ordinary men in battle. First published in 1948, as America was still basking in the glories of the Allied victory, it altered forever the popular perception of warfare.

The Executioner's Song (1979): Reconstructs the crime and fate of Gary Gilmore, the convicted murderer who sought his own execution in Utah, based on taped interviews with relatives, friends, lawyers, and law-enforcement officials.

Tough Guys don't Dance (1983): A journey into the dark recesses of the American psyche in which a hapless writer with a passion for drink and rich women finds he has a bad case of alcoholic amnesia and must try to reconstruct the missing hours of a terrible evening that resulted in his car being drenched in blood.

The Gospel According to the Son (1997): The story of Jesus, his life, ministry, and the events of the four gospels is revealed in the words of Jesus Christ himself.

The Castle in the Forest (2007): In his first major work of fiction in more than a decade, Mailer sets out to explore the evil of Adolf Hitler. The narrator, a mysterious SS man who is later revealed to be an exceptional presence, gives us young Adolf from birth, as well as Hitler's father and mother, his sisters and brothers, and the intimate details of his childhood and adolescence.

NEW SET:

Barbary Shore (1951): Set in a seedy Brooklyn boarding house during the McCarthy era, an aspiring writer, suffering from amnesia, is trying to rebuild his identity while living among a group of people caught up in domestic violence and raw emotion.

The Deer Park (1955): Desert D'Or is the fashionable Californian resort where Hollywood's elite converge when they need a break. When Sergius O'Shaughnessy, recently discharged from the Air Force, arrives, he finds his burning ambition as a novelist is weakened by the depravity and recklessness of the resort.

An American Dream (1965): First published in 1965, this is the story of Stephen Rojack, war hero, politician, TV personality, who after murdering his rich and beautiful wife is catapulted into an alien world of gangsters, crumbling tenements, police brutality and sleazy nightclubs.

Ancient Evenings (1983): Crossing three millennia to Pharaonic Egypt, this tale returns to that land's essences - the war, magic, gods, death and reincarnations, the lusts, ambitions, jealousies, and betrayals.

Harlot's Ghost (1991): A metaphysical thriller set in the world of the CIA between Berlin in the 1950s and the assassination of JFK in 1963. In it, Norman Mailer created a tough, dangerous world that takes on its own unique set of spiritual values, challenging many of the preconceptions of 20th century American history.
