Daniel Dennett (Continuum Contemporary American Thinkers) by David L. Thompson
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 274kb
Overview: Daniel Dennett is one of America's most important and influential contemporary philosophers. He has made considerable contributions to the philosophy of mind and to evolutionary thought.
This book offers an introduction to Dennett's ideas, his key writings and his contributions to the various fields of philosophy. Thematically organised, the book presents a consistent and accessible philosophy. David L. Thompson examines philosophical problems in consciousness, self, religion, ethics, evolution, freedom and ontology and provides a clear account of how Dennett resolves these issues.

The book explores the twentieth-century stand-off between the scientific worldview, on the one hand, and ethics, freedom and human dignity on the other. Ultimately Thompson presents Dennett's work as reconciling these two approaches. This book covers Dennett's key texts and presents a number of Dennett's often brilliant thought experiments. This is the ideal companion to the study of this hugely influential thinker.

The Legion of Space: The Complete Saga by Jack Williamson
Requirements: ePUB reader, 15.2 MB
Overview: The Legion of Space is a space opera science fiction series by American writer Jack Williamson. The story takes place in an era when humans have colonized the Solar System but dare not go farther, as the first extra-solar expedition to Barnard's Star failed and the survivors came back as babbling, grotesque, diseased madmen. They spoke of a gigantic planet, populated by ferocious animals and the single city left of the evil "Medusae". The Medusae bear a vague resemblance to jellyfish, but are actually elephant-sized, four-eyed, flying beings with hundreds of tentacles. The Medusae cannot speak, and communicate with one another via a microwave code.

Stalkers (1989) Anthology by Ed Gorman, Martin H. Greenberg
Requirements: .ePUB reader, 608 KB
Overview: Movies have given the stalker subgenre a bad name. All those close-ups of big plodding male shoes stalking cute little female feet. All those foggy, back-lit angle-on shots of a tall meaty guy tugging on the leather gloves he is about to wrap around the throat of the woman half a block ahead of him. Or (my favorite) the guy with the nylon pulled down over his head so that his features are all mashed up.
You know the movies I mean. And you know how lame and predictable they’ve become.
It is the intention of this anthology to offer readers a group of variations on the stalker theme, not a one of them using heavy breathing on the sound track or a heroine so stupid she goes into the old mansion alone after midnight.
